Vicki Wicker received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Mississippi and began her career working in Ole Miss's Publications Department as an illustrator and graphic designer. She decided to leave the art world to pursue an advanced degree in education and graduated with her doctorate in 1990. She worked in public schools for three years in testing and special education before obtaining a faculty position at Arkansas State University Beebe, where she taught education, psychology and art.
She signed up for a cake decorating class one summer with her daughter, just for something to do. Her daughter quit after two classes, but she was hooked.
"Unlike any other form of art I've done, people seem to really get a lot of pleasure out of cake. It has been a very spiritual experience for me. Cake is about joy. It's about honoring another person. It makes me think of the woman who pours the bottle of perfume on Jesus's hair before the crucifixtion. The disciples criticize her for wasting money that should have been spent on the poor, but Christ rebukes them. This is important, He says, to honor one another, to let someone know he or she is really special. I think cakes are a way we do that for one another, whether it is for a new couple, a new baby, or a birthday girl, it tells someone he or she is important, unique, special. I think that's just about one of the best things we can do in this journey of life."
Dr. Wicker lives right next door to the cake shop with her husband, David, and son, Forest. They have been Searcy residents for over 15 years.
